EVALUATION

Evaluation Services are slightly different from Editorial Services. The main difference is with my editorial services, I edit full manuscripts, but with evaluation services, I am looking at smaller components, such as the first three chapters (what writers typically submit to editors and agents), the first five pages (because these days, writers have to keep the reader intrigued starting on page ONE!), and query letters.

  • Evaluation :: First Three Chapters (up to 100 pages) ~ Essentially, I'm looking at these chapters to see how well you set up the story and the characters and build the plot throughout these first three chapters--do they keep me wanting to move forward?
  • Evaluation :: The First Five ~ These days, stories have to be great from the first page! Puts a lot of pressure on the writer, right? Here, I look at how intrigued I am with continuing further. Clients will submit a synopsis or at least a story description with the first five pages, and I will read the synopsis/description, then read the first couple of pages for that X factor, the factor that compels a reader to flip the page and continue reading. The First Five Evaluation is free as long as clients allow me to use the work done as a teaching aid for other writers. What does this mean? I might post the five pages and my comments to the pages--without a title and without client's name or contact information. Client would retain rights to all his or her work If you wish to keep all information between client and editor, then there is a small fee for the service.
  • Evaluation :: Query Letters ~ Query letters are often the bridge that allows you to send chapters of your book (or the whole book) to an editor or agent, and though there are tons of web pages that show you the format or structure of query letters, working to make yours shine can often be very tedious. Here, I'm looking at the components of the letter, such as the intro and outro, the book description and writer section to offer suggestions on how you might tighten up the letter.
